Empty Promises Book Review

We live in a world that promises all sorts of things.  Power, fame, fortune, beauty, you name it. People long and look for acceptance and worth.  These promises can all be yours if you do what's necessary   While wanting to be successful or secure in and of itself are not bad.  But sometimes, those things are good.  But most times, our pursuit of these can lead us down a road of life long unfulfillment.

I'm currently reading "Empty Promises- The Truth About You, Your desires, and the Lies You're Believing" by Pete Wilson. The book takes a look at the idols in our life.  Wanting to be accepted by others and doing whatever it takes to gain approval only to find yourself destined to be disappointed.  Desiring power and chasing it like it is a drug. These are all ways that we can end up worship idols in our lives according to the book.

Chapters include:

1. Deceptively Good
2. The Aware Life
3. The Seduction of Achievement
4. Addicted to Approval
5. The Perils of Power
6. Money Always Wants to be More than Money
7. Religion Lies
8. Addicted to Beauty
9. Chasing a Dream
10. You Are What You Worship
11. Living Close to Truth
12. Soul Satisfaction

My thoughts:

As I glanced at description of this book's, I thought the main topic was intriguing. I was surprised to learn that even I, had been looking to other things to fulfill me.

This read is only 204 pages, but it's chock full of info and you have to take it in bite size pieces.  At least, that's what I do whenever a book gets real deep.   You too will be challenged to take a look at your own life and the things that you may be worshiping.

The bottom line?  We all have a God-sized hole inside of us that only he can fill.  Everything else is fleeting and only temporary.  If you are hungry for more of God and want to turn your focus more towards Him, I would suggest reading this book.
